Redcar Athletic

After the disappointment of the previous week where all our efforts came to nothing it was refreshing to see our commitment and hard work was rewarded with a well-earned extra time 3-2 win in the league cup.
Redcar Athletic are in our division so it was a good test against league opposition early in the season. What spectators saw was a great example of youth football played in the right spirit. On a very warm afternoon, Falcons took the early initiative going down the slope and James 'Swede' Spence fired into the corner from an acute angle. Collecting the ball outside the area Swede hit the ball right footed along the ground to nestle in the far corner fooling the keeper. Redcar came at Falcons and it's fair to say shaded the rest of the first half testing Jamie Hogg in the net and having several good chances including a horrible up and under that Ted Lonsdale cleared from under his own crossbar. An equaliser for Redcar followed soon after to put things level at half time.

In the second half and up the slope Falcons played the better football and Hayden Wilson hooked a loose ball into the net putting us into the lead. However, a penalty awarded shortly after lead to a nail biting finish and extra time. It was in the first ten minutes that Swede latched onto a through ball, rounded the keeper and swept home. It was all Falcons from then on as the rossoceleste bossed the game until the final whistle. The Redcar coach came over to congratulate the team on their worthy win.

The togetherness and team spirit really was something else. We had four subs on the day and ringing regular changes kept fresh legs on the pitch. In the dying moments the four guys on the line who had put in a full shift already were chomping at the bit to go back on.
